A great evening was had by all for the 5th annual Student Design Competition Awards on November 19, 2015. 12 students were invited to present their creative and innovative Lighthouse designs. The Judges, John Willmott, Gerald Grieve (Landscape Architect), and Susan Schappert (Town of Oakville Heritage Planner), as well as the JWA staff, were amazed at the effort and time that each student put into their Lighthouse design. The level of detail that the students put into their work made the judges’ task difficult. After serious thought, Siran Xiang from St. Mildreds was awarded first place, Jack Xu from Loyola was awarded second place, and Kaitlyn Malave from Blakelock was awarded third place. Honourable mentions went to Ali Salama, Dario Taylor, and Adam Farrow.
This year students were tasked with designing a new Lighthouse for the Oakville Pier. All 28 students did a fantastic job with their designs. We were very impressed but with so many entrants, the JWA staff had the challenging task of creating a shortlist of submissions that we felt best fit the requirements of the competition. We had a difficult time choosing our top 12 but with the large number of entrants there was no other option.
We would like to thank the Holiday Inn for providing us with the spacious venue. We would also like to thank all of the sponsors, parents, teachers, and friends that came to our awards night to support all of our participants.
We thank every student for entering our 5th annual Student Design Competition and for putting forth a great effort. We now have a higher standard for the coming years of the Student Design Competition because of the creative and innovative projects submitted this year.
