JWA Quarterly Feature: Oakville New England Style Home
September 3, 2014
James Grant Custom Homes has constructed a spectacular house in southeast Oakville. Conceived by JWA as a shingle-style house paying homage to classic New England architecture, detail elements that are commonly found in Oakville as well as in JWA’s design portfolio are also evident. The house sits on a corner lot at 1137 Carey Road at Morrison Heights.
The main floor of this house is unique with a soaring two-storey foyer that can double as a gathering space for parties. At either end of this space are the formal rooms – dining and living room. The corner windows in the living room make it special throughout the day. As one transitions to the rear of the house, a main staircase is situated in a centre hall, which allows it to be public or private depending on what is occurring in the house. A charming study is located off the centre hall and is accessed through bi-parting French doors and built in bookshelves that one walks through to get to the private study. The study also has a walk out to a west side patio.
The family spaces are located to the rear of the house with a large family room, breakfast room and kitchen that span a good portion of the back yard. Jim Grant keenly wanted to employ a covered sitting porch and it was designed off the breakfast room with a fireplace to view. A generous mudroom and garage make it an ideal layout for an active family.
On the second level, a master bedroom with view and walkout to patio faces the rear yard. While it is common in our upper scale houses for the master bedroom to enjoy a 5 piece ensuite bathroom and a walk in dressing room, Jim has finished both with great millwork fromMisani. For convenience, the master dressing room has a door into the main laundry for convenience. Each of the 3 other bedrooms on the floor are located on each corner of the house and include private bathrooms and generous closets.
The living space is expanded to the lower level where Jim has included for a entertainment kitchen/bar, lounge area, games area, future theatre room, fitness room, a guest bedroom suite and a good amount of storage.
With a double gambrel gable roof and round roof windows, this house best suit those who appreciate the shingle style and very well detailed millwork. Architecturally, I was glad to see my vision was able to fit very nicely on the corner lot. All the elevation designs have unique features and their contribution to the streetscape is, in my opinion, is a worthy addition.
This is the third house we have designed for Jim Grant. Others can be found at 193 Dianne Avenue and 153 Dianne Avenue in Oakville. Jim brings a high level of quality and attention to detail to his projects making our collaboration a good fit for each other. As project manager on site, Jim is able to monitor all aspects of the job and he understands that the details matter to his customers, the architect but primarily for himself. 1137 Carey Road is currently listed with Goodale Miller Century 21 at just over $4M. Perhaps you can get in to take a look!
